Cheap But Still Tasty!

There is nothing quite so good as the smell and taste of a warm, fresh baked loaf. You won’t want to go back to mass produced, store brought bread once you have baked and eaten your own tasty loaf.

Serve with a simple, homemade vegetable soup, for a meal that tastes anything but frugal.

Bread flour is expensive and most recipes tell you to use it. We have been baking our own bread for nearly 10 years and we don’t use bread flour. Plain flour is a lot cheaper than bread flour and does a good job.

The most basic frugal white bread would be made with just plain flour, yeast, sugar, salt and water. However the addition of a small amount of butter and milk makes the bread taste better and have a nicer texture.

Follow these steps to make your own delicious bread.

Basic Frugal White Bread Recipe

Makes 2 loaves

  • 10 fl oz hand hot water
  • 5 fl oz warm milk
  • 1 teaspoon white sugar
  • 2 level teaspoons dried yeast
  • 1.5 lb plain white flour
  • 1/2 – 1 level tablespoon salt (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon oil or 1/2 oz butter

Grease two 1lb loaf tins

  1. Pour 5 fl oz of the water into a bowl, add the sugar and the yeast. Stir well and set aside until the mixture becomes frothy.
  2. Sift the flour and salt into a bowl, add the oil or rub in the butter.
  3. When the yeast mixture is ready to use, pour it into a well in the center of the flour. Add the rest of the water and milk.
  4. Mix to form a dough. (Use a spoon to start mixing and finish with your hands).
  5. Sprinkle some flour onto your counter top and knead well until the dough is soft and elastic. About 10 minutes.
  6. Place the dough in a clean bowl and cover with a damp towel or plasticwrap.
  7. Leave the dough in a warm place for about 1 hour, until it has doubled in size.
  8. Give the dough one more quick knead, just for a minute or two.
  9. Split the dough in half and place into your prepared bread tins.
  10. Cover again and leave to rise in a warm place for 30 minutes – 1 hour.
  11. Pre heat your oven to 450 F.
  12. Bake the bread for 35-40 minutes or until the loaves sound hollow when tapped. Cool on a wire rack.

If you want to make bread rolls, divide the mixture up into 16 equal pieces after the first rising. Place the dough balls onto baking sheets and press down to flatten them a little.

After the dough has risen for the 2nd time, bake in the oven for 15 to 20 minutes.
