Radish

Growing radishes is simplicity itself. It really is hard to go wrong with these fast growing veggies.

Radishes are an ideal vegetable to grow because they can withstand many conditions and can be sown about 4 weeks before the last frost.

They are also ideally suited for growing in containers.

How To Grow

Radish seed is fairly small, so make sure that your soil is free of lumps, or the seed will have a hard time growing through it.

Plant the seed at a depth of about 1/2 an inch with a spacing of 2-3 inches between each seed. They will germinate quickly – about 3 days.

You can set radishes between other plants. Because they grow so quickly, they are ready to pull up before the other plants get too big.

Harvest 20-40 days after planting. The longer you leave them the bigger they get. But they taste better if you pick them when they have reached a useable size.

Stagger your plantings for a continuous supply. In the summer months try to plant them where they will get a little shade. Radishes don’t like temps over 75 degrees.

Radishes need about 1 inch of water per week and a single feed will be enough for them. If your soil is already nutrient rich then you can do away with feeding all together.

Radishes will store for two weeks in the refrigerator.

Planting some radishes is a great way to introduce kids to gardening because they are so quick and easy to grow.

Radishes aren’t just for salads and sandwiches.
